A very powerful, depressing, thought provoking story of how just 3 minutes and a stupid act changed the lives of a whole family, definitely for the worse. Ajay is in awe of his elder brother Birju, and things look rosy when they emigrate to the US in the early 70s. But soon tragedy strikes and the parents as well as the two sons try to cope with it in their own ways, especially Shubha, the mother and Ajay. The story traces Ajays sad journey into adulthood.
I could totally relate with the various characters, behaviors, customs and thought processes.
The end was a tad disappointing. I was rooting for the family.
Another Indian author whom I have serendipitously discovered. I would keenly follow his literary activities.

This novel brought a smile to my face when I finished it. After Rohinton Mistry stopped writing India based novels it made me feel a little empty. Akhil Sharma has filled this void by writing such a gem of a book in a very lucid manner. It helps that I identify myself with the Indianess of the family uprooted from their origin country and making a new life in a foreign country. After an accident which scars the family, making the protagonist Ajay use dark humor and his wits to survive was wonderful. The real summary of this book should be no matter what happens, life goes on! Akhil Sharma, hoping all your books are as optimistic and grittier as this one.

You want to know something? My people can write a depressing book. Like, we give classic Russian authors a run for their money with the crushing, unrelenting, heartbreakers. I mean, honestly. I AM SPENT.

The stark, unsentimental, matter-of-fact writing style reminded me of something like Ha Jin, with its unexpected moments that are so poetic they kind of take your breath away.

That said: its an emotional steamroller. LOOKOUT.

Family Life allowed me to enter, if briefly, into a very close, private, intimate space. I feel quite grateful to have spent these moments of pain and resiliency with him, to witness the suffering of the people in this novel. I dont care that it doesnt read like fiction: it reads like truth, and that is all the work I ever need fiction to do. I could feel Akhil Sharma breathing right behind me as I read.

Sharmas honesty, wit, and courage are something to behold here.

Akhil Sharma tears your heart apart as he tells the story of an Indian family living as outsiders in America. Tragedy strikes and the reader is swept into a sad, lonely and heart wrenching tornado. I loved that the characters showed true emotions of weakness, selfishness, pity, guilt and denial. As I reached the final page, I realized that through all the sadness a beautiful story had unfolded; revealing the power love, family, devotion and perseverance. A must read!
